Gap Night Adjustment Rule: How to increase occupancy for nights between bookings

Do you want to convert more orphan days into booked nights? With the Gap Night Adjustment rule, you can set the price and minimum night stay adjustments for booking gaps up to the number of nights you specify.

Let's take a look at an example where we adjust the nightly rates for gap nights between bookings. These nights are notoriously difficult to book, especially if the gap falls in the middle of the week. So, we are looking to discount gaps of 1-3 nights, in order to make them more likely to be booked.
  1. Click the New button

Rules can only be added while editing the strategy. From the strategies overlay, click the New button to add a new rule.

  2. Select the Gap Night Adjustment Rule

To edit the gap night settings for your strategy, select Gap Night Adjustment Rule from the dropdown list.

  3. Enter the adjustment amount

The Gap Night Adjustment Rule modal contains 2 required fields. First, enter the adjustment amount as either a flat fee, or as a percentage. The Adjust Fee field represents the flat amount that is added to the nightly rate for the dates recognized as gap nights. The Adjust Percent field represents the percent increase made to the nightly rate for the dates recognized as gap nights. A negative sign in front of the number, will represent a discount.
In our example, we have entered a value of -10 for the percentage adjustment. This will apply a 10% discount to each night in the gap between bookings

  4. Enter the number of nights

Next, enter the maximum number of nights that will be recognized as a gap between bookings in the Gap Nights Up To field.
In our example, we have entered a value of 2 nights. If there is a gap of 1 or 2 nights between two bookings, then Rategenie will identify those dates as gap nights, and will apply a 10% discount to the nightly rate.

  5. OPTIONAL: Enter the minimum length of stay

Next, enter the minimum length of stay for guests booking the gap night in the Minimum Nights field. This will determine the minimum number of nights that will be allowed for a gap night booking.
In our example, we have set a minimum night stay requirement of Length of gap - 1. This means that if a gap between the bookings is 2 nights long, the minimum night requirement for a booking would be 1 night.

  6. OPTIONAL: Add additional adjustments

Next, click the Add New Item button to add additional gap night adjustments. You can add other gap night time ranges that you wish to have adjusted during rate pushes.
In our example, we have added a new line item for when there is a gap of up to 4 nights. We have added a smaller percent adjustment of -5, and we have set the min stay requirement to 3 nights. This will result in a 10% discount and a 1 night min stay for gaps of 1 or 2 nights, and then a 5% discount and a 3 night min stay for gaps of 3 or 4 nights. This should help to fill our calendar, even when there are gaps during slow days of the week.

  7. Click the Save button

Lastly, click the Save button to save the rule to the strategy.
Please remember to save the strategy, in order for the changes to take effect. New rates will only be generated once the strategy has been saved.
